3D Scanning & Architectural Documentation of Naggar Castle, Himachal Pradesh

Location :    Kullu, Himachal Pradesh
Project Type: Heritage Documentation
Technology: Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) / LiDAR
Deliverables: 3D Scan Data, Point Cloud, 3D Documentation & Architectural Drawings

Project Overview :-
Naggar Castle is a historic heritage structure located in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh, known for its distinctive Himalayan stone-and-timber construction and traditional architectural character. The structure features multiple levels, intricate wooden elements, varied surfaces and complex architectural geometry.

Voxel 3D Technology undertook digital documentation of the existing structure using Terrestrial Laser Scanning (TLS) scanner. The objective was to accurately capture the existing physical condition of the castle and convert it into a detailed digital dataset that could be used for architectural documentation, analysis and future reference.

The project demonstrates how modern reality-capture technology can be applied to document and digitally preserve significant heritage structures.

The Challenge :-
Documenting a historic structure such as Naggar Castle presents several challenges due to its complex geometry, irregular surfaces, multiple levels and detailed architectural elements. Conventional measurement methods can require extensive site time and may make it difficult to capture every architectural detail consistently.

The project required a method that could capture the existing structure comprehensively while maintaining the spatial relationships between different architectural elements. A reliable digital record was also required so that the existing condition could be studied without depending entirely on repeated physical measurements.

The key objective was therefore to create an accurate and measurable digital representation of the existing structure that could serve as a foundation for architectural documentation and future technical requirements.

Our Approach :-
Voxel 3D Technology used the Terrestrial Laser Scanner to capture detailed three-dimensional spatial information from multiple scanning positions across the site.

The scanner captured millions of spatial points representing the surfaces and geometry of the structure. Multiple individual scans were then registered and aligned to create a unified dataset covering the documented areas of the castle.

After registration, the scan data was processed and organized to generate a detailed 3D point cloud. The processed dataset provided a digital representation of the existing structure that could be viewed, measured and further developed for documentation.

Project Outcome :-
By combining Terrestrial Laser Scanner scanning, scan registration, point-cloud processing and architectural documentation, Voxel 3D Technology created a comprehensive digital reference of the existing structure.

The resulting information provides a foundation for documentation, architectural study, conservation, restoration planning and future reference, helping bridge the gap between The project transformed the physical structure of Naggar Castle into a detailed and measurable digital record using Terrestrial Laser Scanning technology.

traditional heritage and modern digital technology.

Why This Matters :-
Heritage structures are constantly exposed to natural ageing, environmental conditions and changes over time. Creating an accurate digital record helps preserve information about their existing condition and geometry.

Through digital reality capture, important architectural information can be recorded, measured and stored in a format that can be revisited in the future.
